The plain shank carries shear load across the joint instead of the thread, so the parts cannot creep along the thread under sideways load. That is why structural connections specify bolts, not set screws. A2 (304) stainless covers most outdoor and damp indoor work without rusting, though it is not the grade for coastal or chemical exposure.
To prevent seizure, use scuff paste.
