    Tap. A thread tap, for cutting or cleaning an internal thread.

    Cut in stages — taper to start the thread square, second to carry it down, plug to finish a blind hole to the bottom. Back it off every turn or so to break the swarf.

    Typical uses

    • Tapping new threads in plate and bar
    • Cleaning damaged or painted threads
    • Machine and jig work
    • Repair and rethreading

    The tapping drill size matters more than the tap — too tight and you snap it, too loose and the thread strips.
